On 28 August 2020, the Romanian DPA published a press release on several recommendations the entities involved in the 2020 Romanian local elections shall observe to ensure compliance with the data protection legislation.
In a nutshell, the Romanian DPA states that political parties, independent candidates, national minority citizens’ organizations, political alliances, electoral alliances may process data (as data controllers) in the context of local elections and political campaigns, but only with the strict observance of the legal requirements in electoral field and data protection field, in particular those related to purpose and storage limitation, data minimization and transparency of the processing.
