Italian regulator fines Facebook EUR 7M for unlawful processing of consumer data

On 17 February 2021, the Italian Competition Authority announced a fine of EUR 7M was imposed against Facebook following non-compliance with the mandated changes to its data practices, as ordered by the authority in November 2018.

In a nutshell, the authority found that found Facebook was misleading users with “generic and incomplete” information regarding the use of personal data for various purposes, failing to distinguish between the data necessary for offering personalized services and the use of data for targeted advertisement.
