The EDPB releases its 2022 Annual Report

On 17 April 2023, the European Data Protection Board (“EDPB”) published on its website the 2022 Annual Activity Report.

This report features a synthetic overview of the EDPB’s activity during 2022, covering the following main streams:

  • Enforcement coordination and ensuring consistency through binding decisions issued under Article 65 of the GDPR;
  • The EDPB Secretariat’s activities;
  • The EDPB consistency opinions;
  • General guidance, covering: (i) 9 EDPB guidelines adopted during 2022 in their first version for public consultation, as well as (ii) 2 EDPB guidelines adopted in their final version after public consultation;
  • The registry of decisions taken by supervisory authorities and courts on issues handled in the consistency mechanism as per Article 70 (1) (y) of the GDPR;
  • Legislative consultation and documents addressed to the EU institutions or national authorities (including, among others, 4 EDPB-EDPS Joint Opinions);
  • Other guidance and information notes;
  • A total of 347 held meetings, including plenary meetings, expert subgroup meetings, task force meetings, and drafting team meetings;
  • Stakeholder consultations and speaking engagements;
  • Supervisory authority activities, covering cross-border cooperation and some relevant national cases with exercise of corrective powers;
  • Coordinated Supervision Committee of the large EU information systems and of EU bodies, offices, and agencies.

According to the EDPB Chair’s foreword to this report, “Today, the EDPB is a major player in the European Economic Area (EEA) digital economy. It does not just ensure that data protection law is applied consistently across the EEA, but it helps shape Europe’s digital future.
