Facebook temporarily suspends some Instagram and Messenger features for EU users

22.12.2020

On 20 December 2020, Facebook announced deciding to temporarily switch off some features in both its Instagram and Messenger applications for European users (such as group chat polls, the ability to set nicknames for friends in Messenger or to share augmented-reality face filters via direct message on Instagram), in order to ensure the said features are in compliance with the ePrivacy Directive. Facebook stated that the company is still determining the best way to bring these features back and to rebuild products in a way that works flawlessly for users and also complies with new privacy rules.

A list of the features to be suspended has not been published, as Facebook indicated that it would very quickly reactivate the ones for which the company is confident it complies with the privacy rules.
